Every Corbett map makes sense once you fix three references. Ramnagar town sits at the park's southeastern corner — the railway station, the forest offices, and your arrival point. The Kosi river runs north from Ramnagar past Garjia and the Dhikuli resort belt, forming the park's eastern edge; almost every resort you will consider sits along this one road. And the Ramganga river flows east–west through the park's interior, feeding the reservoir and the Dhikala grasslands at the heart of the reserve. Gates fan out from Ramnagar: Amdanda (Bijrani) just north of town, Dhangarhi about 18 km up the Kosi road, Dhela and Jhirna 13–16 km to the southwest, Durga Devi about 28 km northeast on the Ranikhet road, and the Sitabani buffer across the Kosi to the east.
Reading distances as drive times
Map kilometres translate unevenly to minutes here. The Ramnagar–Dhangarhi stretch is a good highway (25 minutes); the southern gate roads are slower village routes (Dhela ~30 minutes, Jhirna ~40); Durga Devi's hill road needs a full hour. Inside the gates, safari tracks are unpaved and speed-limited — the 32 km from Dhangarhi gate to the Dhikala complex takes well over an hour, which is part of why Dhikala works as an overnight destination rather than a quick visit. For pre-dawn safari reporting, work backwards from these times with a buffer; the travelling inside Corbett guide does that arithmetic gate by gate.
What the map means for your booking decisions
Three practical map lessons before you book. First, resort location beats resort name: a property "in Jim Corbett" can sit anywhere on 30 km of the Kosi belt or the southern approach — match it to your safari gate using the resort area guide. Second, zones do not connect internally: you cannot drive from Bijrani into Dhikala; each zone is its own in-and-out from its own gate, which is why two safaris in different zones mean two separate gate runs. Third, the buffer is part of the geography: Sitabani's forest across the Kosi runs its own permits and its own rules, and the town-side attractions — Garjia temple, Corbett Falls on the Kaladhungi road, and the museum at Dhangarhi — all sit outside the gates entirely, reachable by local taxi without any permit.
